The Chebec (also called Xebec) (1750-1786) has striking sails, which seem to have been designed primarily for speed, as compared to the square sails of the galleys of the time which were used mainly to relieve the rowers when sailing before the wind. The 24-gun Chebec was one of the finest sailing ships of the 18th Century. In 1750, Majorcan shipbuilders, reputed for their skills, were engaged to build four vessels of this type. Two of them, the Requin and the Indiscret, were 260 tons and carried 24 six-inch guns, compared to the other two, the Ruse and the Serpent, which were 150 tons and carried 18 six-inch guns.

The Chebec (Xebec) is one of our favourite display ship models.
